Bush Search and Rescue was asked to present at a land search and rescue training activity for the Reserve Response Force (RRF) at Simpson Barracks in Watsonia on Saturday 1 June 2013. The RRF is the Force Element that has been the basis of the Austalian Defence Force's response to fires and floods in recent years.
The training activity was pitched at the Command level with the objective to develop and exercise command and control of the RRF Commanders.
Peter Campbell and Eric Krista provided a presentation of Bush Search and Rescue's search and rescue skills, land search techniques and control and conduct of searches.
We learnt that the Army can be activated to provide additional personnel when required during large scale searches and other emergencies such as floods and fires under the Defence Aid to the Civil Community (DACC) protocol.
The army has provided personnel who participated alongside Bush Search and Rescue in searches such as 2001 Tawonga Gap search for a missing paraglider and the 2009 Mount Feathertop search for Tim Holding.
