BSAR Steep Snow and Ice training 29-31 July 2016

BSAR Steep snow and ice training
For BSAR members with Steep Snow and Ice rating, and those seeking it, the Steep Snow and Ice alpine training this year is on 29-31 July 2016 at Bogong Village/Falls Creek.  
 
The training will include travelling in alpine environments, snow and ice safety, rescue techniques, using crampons and ice axes and sled haulage on steep terrain.
 
Who should attend?
  • North East and other BSAR members keen to acquire steep snow and ice skills
  • BSAR members with Steep Snow & Ice rating "T" (technical) or "C" (competent)

BSAR Behind The Log May 2016

BSAR annual training at JB Plain 15-17 July 2016

The Bush Search and Rescue Annual Training weekend was held on 15-17 July 2016 at JB Plain near Mt Hotham.  61 BSAR members and prospective members attended.
 
The weekend provided BSAR members and other interested experienced bushwalkers with training in skills for bush and alpine search and rescue. The program included exercises on first aid, treating hypothermia, using Bothy shelters, building survival shelters, evacuating a patient using Sked stretchers, radio use, navigation and night searching.

Search for missing person near Monbulk

Call-out

Sunday 22/05/16.  BSAR were called out for a search for a missing person near Monbulk, Melbourne.  

Monday 23/05/16.  Twenty BSAR members were deployed and searched in bush areas near Monbulk

The search concluded late on Monday afternoon when the body of the missing person was located.

Late on ANZAC Day, BSAR was called to join a seach that was already underway for a man who had gone missing out of Sawmill Settlement, between Merrijig and Mt Buller.

SAFETY ALERT: There is no water on the Viking and Razor

Caution

March 2016.  Bushwalkers undertaking remote day or multi day hiking trips in the Mount Howitt, Cross Cut, Mt Speculation, Razor and Viking areas of the Alpine National Park are required to ensure they have adequate water before leaving trail heads. 

SafeTRX phone app

SafeTRX is a mobile phone app (iOS and Android) that has been developed for maritime use.
In Australia, the Volunteer Coast Guard provides a monitoring service for the app.

Bushwalking requirements and mobile phone usage

  • Mobile phones are usually not kept turned on for extended periods during bushwalks.
  • Many remote bushwalking locations do not have mobile network coverage
  • Simple user operation is an advantage
  • The ability to send out an emergency alert is a desirable feature.

Missing person found near Lerderderg State Park

Thursday 18/02/16. Twenty four Bush Search and Rescue volunteers participated in the search for a missing person in Lerderderg State Park, who was found at 11 a.m.
