Note: these were retired in 2017 and replaced by Garmin Oregon 600 devices.
Bush Search and Rescue used Garmin Vista HCx GPS units in the field. These units have the following advantages over the older eTrex models:
- Rapid acquiring of satellites
- Greatly superior satellite reception – they work well under forest foliage
- Mapsheets can be purchased and loaded – including roads, tracks, walking tracks and even 10m countours for most of Australia
- Colour display with a good backlight
- USB computer inteface
- Joystick toggle simplifies inputting information
